THE AGRICULTURAL & FORESTRY SECTOR
A SECTOR CRITICAL TO HUMAN LIFE
From the food we eat, to the clothes we wear, to our shelter.
At Agroforestry Group we understand that our lives, prosperity and survival are all dependent on the agricultural and forestry sector. The sectors combined account for more than USD 3 trillion annually or 3.40% of global GDP according to the World Bank. This figure however is solely based on an output basis. The overall contribution of the agriculture sector to GDP is far larger than reported because sectors related to agriculture - food and beverage production, stores & services, textiles, apparel, tobacco products, leather products; and dozens more - rely on agricultural and forestry inputs in order to contribute added value to the economy.
The sectors actual contribution is between USD 15-18 trillion or 15-20% of global GDP. Furthermore, it provides direct employment to more than 27% of the worlds workforce, or more than 40% taking indirect related jobs such employment in manufacturing and food and beverage services.
As the worlds population increases, the sectors importance is becoming increasingly important in the face of multiple challenges such as urbanisation, the urgent need to increase production, food safety and climate change.
The current world population of 7.6 billion is expected to reach 8.6 billion in 2030 and 9.8 billion in 2050.
